New Seal Pup on the Farnes

Seal pups arrive on the Farne Islands

This little archipelago off the North East coast of Northumberland can be one of the most inhospitable places you could wish to visit as we enter the windy, stormy winter months, but it is here that a large group of Grey Seals choose to live, mate and breed,  with pups arriving into this trecherous environment and the challenges of survival begin.  This year’s

Northumberland 13th August 2016 Hold that date……..

Right on Bamburgh Castle Green the quintessential cricket field, nestled beneath that towering fortress that is Bamburgh Castle, on 13th August 2016 the BFestival will be held – for the second year running Stay Northumbria is main sponsor of this great event which will see a plethora of local musicians performing from twighlight til dusk in aid of Hospice Care North Northumberland

An English Man’s home………

is his Castle of course, and here in Northumberland we have more Castles than any other county in England. Now not all of them are lived in, and many lie ruin and testiment to the turbulent past they have witnessed.  Those which are lived in like Bamburgh and Alnwick are open to the public for most of the year, and open weekends only in the “off season”.  Both of these castles also feature in many “casting sessions”, being favourites of both big and small screen producers alike. So oft times on a visit you may come across the film maker’s entourage,  as the next epic is in the making. The imposing ruins of Dunstanburgh provide a spectacular back drop to a lovely walk from Craster to Embleton (or vice versa) part of the greater St Oswald’s Way, or to an 18 hole golf epic as you drive toward the ruins, on the Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Club links course. Further North lies the ruins of Norham and Barmoor Castles, both crucial locations during the Battle of Flodden …

North o’ the Wall

Once the great divide, now one of the world’s biggest tourist attractions.  Did Hadrian know what a fantastic thing he was creating way back then?  Come and see for yourself – Northumberland has just been voted the second best place in the UK to come and visit/stay (only bettered by Cornwall but we’ll let you make that decision for yourself once you get here).  North Northumberland in particular is spectacular, big skies – one of the country’s few “black sky” designated areas at Keilder, wide open landscapes, fantastic coastlines and more castles than any other county in the UK.

A good holiday cottage will provide all you need for the family….

Finding a holiday cottage which not only caters for you all to sleep, dine and relax as a family can be hard enough which is why it is great when you find one that goes that extra mile.  The family cottages rented by Stay Northumbria on the North Northumberland coast do just that, in particular their flagship property Hastings House.  Its a Visit England graded 5* Gold Award, the Gold Award being awarded because it does go that extra mile, infact a few! So no need to worry about bringing the cot, the high chair, the baby bath, the bottle steriliser and all the rest of the day to day paraphenalia that having a young family entails, and if you ring their  HQ which is less than a mile from the house with any questions you may have or to organise little Johnny’s birthday cake or Sarah’s riding lessons they’ll do that too. And, of course Hastings House welcomes the other members of your family too – your dog, your cat, and even your budgie are …

Bassets @ the Bothy

The Bothy in Beadnell, albeit one of our very dog friendly holiday cottages where dogs go free, doesn’t usually accept more than four dogs (dependent upon size/type), however when we met these seven show Basset Hounds who could resist. They and their owners left the property spotless (thank you so much) and you’d never have guessed that this extra large canine family had been in residence for a week. They loved the close proximity of the Beadnell and Seahouses beaches and the open plan aspects of the cottage made it an ideal base for their Spring break.

The Potted Lobster

This new venture by chef and restauranteur Richard Sim brings a wealth of fresh local produce to your palette – lobsters obviously being the flag ship dish and with a delight of other local (mainly) seafood dishes to tempt you.  Our reviewers & Stay Northumbria team members Alan & Lisa (who by the way are Rick Stein aficionados too),  went for the Chilli Squid  and the Potted Lobster as starters, followed by Clam Linguine and traditional Fish and Chips with a new slant – Lager & Lemon batter..mmm!! Can’t wait for our turn to do another review on this one! Reviewers recomendation : Highly Recommended. Follow The Potted Lobster on facebook : https://www.facebook.com/pottedlobster  where you will also find their menu and message them to book online. Photo courtesy of Potted Lobster facebook page.
